AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Østermarie is a small, leafy village on Bornholm's east coast, sitting in open fields about 8 km west of the harbour town of Svaneke and between Østerlars and the sea. Founded only around 1880, it has fewer than 500 residents and a string of tidy cottages that make it a favourite base for holidaymakers who want the quiet, farming side of the island rather than its busier resorts.↗↗↗
The heart of the village is a remarkable pair of churches standing side by side: a proud 19th-century granite building and, in its shadow, the ruin of the original 12th-century church. Between them stand four Viking-age runestones with early Christian inscriptions, giving Østermarie one of the most concentrated doses of history you'll find anywhere on Bornholm.↗↗
For most visitors the church site is the main stop, and it pairs easily with a cake at a converted village school, a stroll into the great Almindingen forest, or a drive to the clanging harbours of Svaneke and Gudhjem, both barely a quarter of an hour away.
