AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Old Little Belt Bridge (Den Gamle Lillebæltsbro) is a 1,178-metre steel through-truss bridge spanning the narrow Little Belt strait between Jutland and Funen. Opened on 14 May 1935 with a royal ceremony attended by 50,000 spectators, it was Denmark's first combined road-and-rail bridge and remains the only rail connection between the country's two main landmasses.↗↗↗
Today the bridge doubles as one of Denmark's most distinctive tourist attractions. Since 2015, Bridgewalking has let visitors ascend to the very top of the steel structure — 60 metres above sea level — and walk its full length on guided tours, one of only a handful of such experiences in the world. The surrounding waters of the Little Belt are home to a resident population of harbour porpoises, and the beech forests of the Hindsgavl Peninsula frame one side of the strait.↗↗↗
