AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kivijärvi is a small, forest-ringed lake tucked into the gentle countryside of Mynämäki in Varsinais-Suomi, Finland's southwest 'Finland Proper' coastland. Barely 47 hectares across with roughly five kilometres of shoreline and a single island, it is the kind of intimate village lake Finns swim in, sauna beside and rent a cottage around through the long summer—far removed from the much larger namesake lake up in Central Finland.↗↗↗
For visitors, the lake's focal point is its free public beach on the Hyntilä shore at Tekovahantie 10, maintained by the municipality. There you'll find a shallow, sandy, family-friendly swimming spot with a jetty, changing huts, a toilet and a fire pit, backed by a proper wood-fired beach sauna that locals heat themselves on agreed days from May to September. With the water rating an easygoing 4.4 and the whole lake wrapped in birch and pine forest, Kivijärvi rewards a quiet half-day of swimming, saunaaing and lakeside picnics rather than a packed itinerary.↗↗
