AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Canyon de Chaley is a short, spring-fed canyoning stream tucked into the wooded gorges of the Albarine on the Plateau d'Hauteville, in the Bugey hills of the Ain. Far from the crowded gorges of the Verdon or the Ardèche, its appeal is gentleness and accessibility: a low, open profile where almost every obstacle can be slid, jumped, abseiled or simply walked around. For guided groups and families it has become one of the classic first canyons of the region, barely an hour from Lyon or Geneva.↗↗↗
Run as an adventure-sports experience rather than a wild expedition, the descent lasts roughly an hour of water time after a short forest approach. Wetsuited participants hop into clear, cold pools and string together natural water slides, small waterfalls, optional jumps and a handful of rappels, with safety escapes to the bank throughout. Its mix of fun and low commitment is exactly why local guides choose it for beginners and family outings.↗↗
