From fortified house to family seat

The site begins life as a modest fortified home, a maison forte attested as far back as 1351, then owned by Guillaume Le Tailleur. Of that early stronghold, a square tower with thick walls still survives, quietly embedded in the later buildings. The estate then stayed in the de Champs family from the 14th century all the way to the 19th, an unusually long run of ownership that explains the coherent, unbroken character of the whole property.↗

The château you see today is largely a product of 17th- and 18th-century reworking. The main block was lengthened along the north side, raised by a storey and flanked by two rectangular pavilions, while at the end of the 1700s a square tower was added to the west façade and a perpendicular wing to the south. Built of rubble stone with a regular plan, the house is crowned by a mix of pavilion, long-slope and conical roofs covered in flat tile and shingle—rooflines that give the building its distinctive Burgundian silhouette. Even the mapmakers took note: the château appears on the great Cassini map of 18th-century France.↗↗

History was not always kind. During the Revolution and the Empire the property was placed under sequestration, taken out of its owners' hands for a time. It nonetheless survived as a single estate, and today the château, its park, its gardens and its broad range of outbuildings still form one continuous whole.↗

What to look for on the grounds

The protected ensemble is best absorbed as a sequence of spaces. You come in through an entry grille surmounted by the de Champs de Saint-Léger coat of arms, beyond which lie the 17th-century château, an L-shaped return wing, the communs (service buildings), the gardener's house and a dovecote, all set within a laid-out park and garden. The formal park and the various façades and roofs were recognised as worth preserving and listed under the partial historic-monument inscription of 27 July 1984.↗↗↗

The quiet star of a visit is the kitchen garden. About one hectare in extent and completely enclosed by walls, the potager is itself listed among the protected elements, and it has kept its old bones: low clipped box hedges still edge neat square beds of vegetables, flowers and fruit trees. It is the kind of working pleasure-ground that shows how a country estate fed and ornamented itself at once, and it rewards a slow wander.↗↗

Because the château is private property, the experience is one of grounds and architecture rather than a furnished museum tour; the appeal lies in reading five centuries of domestic building in a single, harmonious village setting.↗

Planning your visit

The château welcomes visitors for free, self-guided visits during two set periods: from 1 to 15 July and through the whole of September, typically in the afternoon from 2pm to 8pm. It also opens for the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine (European Heritage Days) in mid-September, with extra morning hours as well as afternoon ones. Since opening is seasonal and limited, it is worth confirming dates and times before travelling—especially if you are hoping for the Heritage Days, when programming can vary year to year.↗↗↗

Getting there is easiest by car: the Morvan sits roughly two and a half hours from Paris or Lyon via the A6 motorway. By train, travellers commonly head for Avallon (about 2h45 from Paris by regional train) or for Montbard by high-speed train and then onward by bus towards Saulieu or Avallon. Once in the region, the château is a pleasing stop to pair with the Morvan's winding little roads, forest walks and cycle routes, so plan it as part of a wider day in the park rather than a long-distance destination in itself.↗↗
