Dent de Crolles

A hollow mountain and its underground world

The Dent de Crolles earned its fame as much below ground as above. The mountain is riddled with a vast subterranean system — some 55 to 60 km of charted passages entered through a dozen or more known openings spread across its flanks, falling well over 600 m in depth. It was a cradle of French caving: the explorers whose names still mark the caves pushed the boundaries of what was possible underground here, and for nearly a decade the site held the world record for the deepest explored cave. For most visitors the experience is gentler than the speleologists' one — at the Trou du Glaz entrance a cold draught breathes out of the rock and ice can linger on the floor late into the season, and with a couple of lights the first chambers can be walked into for a short, safe stretch before the shafts begin.↗↗↗

For those who want to go deeper, guided multi-day cave tours take you between several of the main entrances and into four of them, with an underground bivouac linking the two days; all caving equipment — helmets, suits, harnesses — is provided, and the program is aimed at confident walkers fascinated by the underworld.↗

Walking to the summit

The classic route rises from the Col du Coq (1,434 m) on the road between Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and Saint-Nazaire-les-Eymes. From the forest the path climbs through alpine pasture, past old shepherds' huts, to the Col des Ayes, then steepens sharply toward the Pas de l'Œille — a notched breach in the rock wall where the ground turns stony and a short cable-secured step asks you to use your hands. Above the gap you emerge onto the lapiaz plateau and follow the trail to the 2,062 m summit. The round trip is roughly 6–7.5 km over 660–700 m of climb, about 4 to 4.5 hours, and is graded difficult: it rewards a sure foot and decent grip.↗

Important to know before you plan a loop: the much-used descent through the Trou du Glaz, part of the GR9, has been closed by municipal order since a major rockfall of late November 2025, with no reopening date announced. So the standard outing is now made as an out-and-back over the Pas de l'Œille, with great care on the way down the steep section. If conditions are wet or snow still clings to the rock, the cable step becomes slippery and should be avoided.↗↗

If you prefer a quieter, more atmospheric approach on the Plateau-des-Petites-Roches side, the path from Le Neyroud in Saint-Pancrasse leads up to the shepherd's hut and then onto the Pas des Terreaux, a narrow corniche that runs beneath the mountain's monumental south-east wall. Fixed ropes protect a stretch of the ledge, and the trail passes the Annette and Chevalier cave entrances; the lone passage is worth the walk for the sheer scale of the cliff it exposes, and can be combined with a climb to the summit via the Pas de l'Œille or kept as a heart-pounding loop back down the ravine. It is a route for assured, unafraid walkers.↗

A full-day circuit for the energetic follows the eastern crest from the summit toward the Col de Bellefont, taking in the Cheminée du Paradis — a tight, polished crack climbed in three steps — and the jumbled sinkholes and pits of the Bellefont chaos, before returning along the GR9 past a reliable water source near the Cabane de Bellefont.↗

Views and wildlife

The summit sits within the Hauts de Chartreuse nature reserve, and the protection shows: chamois and marmots are often spotted among the rocks and meadows. From the top on clear air, the panorama sweeps the Grésivaudan valley and the Belledonne range to the east, with Chamechaude close at hand and, far to the north-east, Mont Blanc floating above the haze; the Chartreuse massif itself fills every other horizon.↗↗

In spring the pastures beneath the cliffs come alive with wildflowers, and bear's-ear primroses cling to the crevices of the limestone along the ledge paths. In the high season, watch the weather: the broad, featureless summit plateau is easy to lose your bearings on once fog rolls in.↗↗

Planning your visit

Access to the mountain is free, and the best season runs from May to November depending on snow. The Col du Coq car park fills quickly on summer weekends, so arrive early; the approach road can be closed in winter, so check conditions at either end of the season. Before setting out, verify the state of the trails with the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park and note that the Trou du Glaz sector remains legally closed.↗↗

Pack for a proper mountain day: boots with good grip, poles for the descent, a warm windproof layer, and at least 1.5 litres of water — there is no reliable source on the standard route. The summit lapiaz is cut by fissures and has knife-edged rock, so keep to the marked trail and watch your footing. Because the peak lies in a nature reserve, dogs are not allowed, even on a leash, and wild camping is prohibited.↗
