AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Derwent Gardens is a compact, characterful riverside park beside the Pavilion in Matlock Bath, built around thermal springs, tufa grottoes, pools and cascades. It sits on the west bank of the River Derwent with the wooded cliffs of the Derwent gorge rising beyond the water, and its origins lie in the resort culture of late Victorian Matlock Bath.↗↗↗
Today the gardens combine easy walking, family-friendly facilities and a richly layered history. The water features make it distinctive, while the Lovers’ Walks footbridge, the Heights of Abraham views and the Matlock Bath Illuminations give visitors several reasons to stop or linger.↗↗
Why visit
Derwent Gardens is most interesting for the way it turns water into scenery. Thermal springs feed the park’s pools, fountains, stepped cascades and grotto-like recesses, many built from tufa, the porous limestone-rich deposit associated with spring water. The effect is both ornamental and geological, like a small pleasure ground grown directly from the landscape.
