AT A GLANCE
Why go?
A small blue-and-white chapel perched at 200 metres above Beauséjour, Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire is both the final station of La Désirade's Way of the Cross and the island's most spectacular belvedere. Built in 1905 and still an active place of devotion, it rewards the steep climb with a 360° panorama stretching from Petite-Terre to Grande-Terre and, on clear days, all the way to Basse-Terre.↗↗
A Chapel Born of Island Faith
La Désirade is a small island of fishermen — roughly 1,600 souls — sitting sentinel at the eastern edge of the Guadeloupe archipelago. Long isolated and scarred by hurricanes and its darker past as a leper colony, the island found in faith both solace and identity. The chapel Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire was raised in 1905 during this tradition of devotion, blessed on 25 June by Abbé Ruillier, the island's priest at the time. Painted white and blue in Mediterranean tones that stand out against the dry green of the hillside, it remains lovingly maintained, with candles lit by visitors who climb to pray or simply to gaze at their island from above.↗
