AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Sipopo is Equatorial Guinea's showpiece resort and conference enclave on the northeastern shore of Bioko Island, about a 25-minute drive from the capital Malabo. Set between tropical rainforest and a long sweep of white sand, it pairs a five-star hotel, an 18-hole golf course and a private beach with the Centre de Conférence de Sipopo, the country's flagship diplomatic venue.↗↗↗
Built almost overnight as a purpose-made "city" to host African Union leaders, Sipopo was designed to put Equatorial Guinea on the map as a conference destination. Today it draws a different crowd: beachgoers, golfers, summit delegates and travellers using it as a polished seaside base before exploring the rest of Bioko.↗↗
A resort built for summits
The story of Sipopo explains its outsized ambitions. The complex was raised over roughly two years to host an African Union summit, gathering 52 luxury presidential villas, a conference hall, an artificial beach, a grand hotel and the country's first 18-hole golf course into one gated compound on the coast. That same venue has since played host to major events, including the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, and it remains Equatorial Guinea's most prominent setting for conferences and state gatherings.
