AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Paseo Marítimo is Malabo's modern seafront promenade, a tree-lined pedestrian avenue running along the Gulf of Guinea on the northern coast of Bioko Island. It offers sweeping views over the city's old and new ports, the water, and the lush volcanic backdrop that defines Equatorial Guinea's capital.↗↗↗
Open around the clock and rated 4.4 stars by visitors, the promenade has become the city's go-to place for breezy evening strolls, fresh seafood at roadside stalls, and watching the sun set over one of West Africa's most unusual capitals.↗↗
What Makes It Special
Malabo sits improbably perched on the rim of a sunken volcanic crater, and its natural harbor has sheltered ships since the British founded Port Clarence here in 1827. From the Paseo Marítimo, you look directly out onto those waters — the same bay where freed slaves once disembarked, where cocoa and timber ships departed for Europe, and where liquefied natural gas tankers now carry Equatorial Guinea's oil-age wealth to the world. The promenade is where the city's layered history and its gleaming modern ambitions face each other across the water.
