AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Makrigialos Beach (often spelled Makrys Gialos) is a long, laid-back stretch of coast on the eastern shore of northern Evia, tucked on the road between the villages of Vlachia and Sarakiniko. It has earned a devoted following among wild campers and families alike for its shady cove, clear Aegean water and easygoing, undeveloped feel that you rarely find on more polished beaches.↗↗
Set against steep green cliffs and a tree-lined stream bed, the beach stays pleasantly shaded for much of the day and looks straight out across the water toward the Northern Sporades islands. Coarse sand gives way to fine pebbles at the shoreline, the water is crystal clear, and the sea shelves gently—making it comfortable for swimming and for families with children.↗↗↗
A Shady Cove Facing the Sporades
Makrigialos sits within a small cove roughly 500 to 600 metres long and some 20 to 30 metres wide, its surface a mix of coarse sand and fine grey pebbles. Because it faces due north and is backed by steep cliffs, it keeps a natural coolness through the hot Eviot summer, with tree cover and shade that make a full day here far more comfortable than on an exposed, sun-baked strip.
