AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Taxiarchis is the mountain village that dresses Greek homes for Christmas. Perched at around 670 metres in the heart of the Holomontas massif near Polygyros in central Halkidiki, it is a green, traditional settlement where fir plantations spill down from the hillsides and dense forest presses in on every road. Named after the Archangel Michael, it pairs a stone-paved old village with one of Greece's great forests, making it a year-round escape into nature rather than a summer beach stop.↗↗↗
Locals call it "the Christmas village," because a large share of the country's real Christmas trees is grown in fields here and around it. That single crop gives the place its curious charm—endless young firs tended by families—while the surrounding University Forest of Taxiarchis, the trails, springs and chapels give you reason to stay a night or two and walk. It is a quiet, authentic alternative to Halkidiki's coast, just 20 km from Polygyros and roughly 70 km from Thessaloniki.↗↗
