AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Shek O Beach is Hong Kong Island's beloved seaside escape — a crescent of soft white sand on the island's southern tip, framed by green cliffs and the open South China Sea. Regarded as the "backyard of Hong Kong Island," it draws families, surfers, and sun-seekers every weekend who want calm waters, excellent facilities, and a village atmosphere just a bus ride from the MTR.↗↗↗
What makes Shek O special is the combination of a well-maintained public beach with a tight-knit village of restaurants and cafés, plus some of Hong Kong's best hiking right on the doorstep — including the iconic Dragon's Back trail and the pastel Lover's Bridge connecting the shore to a tiny rocky islet.↗↗
A Scenic Bay at the Edge of the Island
Tucked into Shek O Village along the southeastern coastline, Shek O Beach faces Island Bay where the South China Sea stretches unbroken to the horizon. Small rocky islets dot the water, including Ng Fan Chau visible across the bay, while forested hills roll up behind the sand on either side. The setting gives it the feel of a hidden cove despite being one of the island's most popular beaches.
