AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked between the M7 motorway and the southern shore of Lake Balaton, the Bugaszegi téglagaléria (Bugaszeg Brick Gallery) is one of Hungary's most endearing self-made attractions: a castle-like brick museum and historical memorial park built almost entirely by one man's hands. For over two decades the irrepressible Csere János—affectionately called Jani bácsi ('Uncle John')—has raised storeys of a fortress from old reclaimed bricks stamped with coats of arms, monograms and masons' marks, turning a hillside near Balatonboglár into what he proudly names the 'Bugaszeg Republic.'↗↗↗
It is free to wander, wonderful with children, and impossible to mistake for anything else in the Balaton region—a quirky, heartfelt curiosity that rewards the short detour off the motorway. The site holds a 4.8-star rating from thousands of visitors, and the draw is simple: a rambling brick wonderland, a garden, a bell tower, farmyard animals and an ever-changing collection of books and antiques, all presided over by its eccentric creator.↗↗
