AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into the wooded foothills above Leányfalu, Rekettyés Lake (Rekettyés-tó) is one of the Danube Bend's small, quiet secrets — a modest upland tarn ringed by forest a short walk from the river villages north of Budapest. It is not a grand scenic lake so much as a peaceful forest clearing with water, a spring and a shady spot to rest, which is exactly what draws walkers who like their destinations unhurried and a little hidden.↗
The real heart of the visit is the spring-fed resting nook that sits alongside the lake: a bench-lined clearing with a fire pit and a small shelter, reached on signed forest trails. Hikers treat it as a stop on the gentle paths climbing away from Leányfalu, or as the reward at the end of a loop that takes in the springs and viewpoints of the surrounding hills. A 1905 postcard already carried the name, so this little spot has been a recognised outing for more than a century.↗↗
A quiet nook, not a showpiece lake
Be honest with your expectations: Rekettyés-tó is small, and visitors note that in dry periods the little lake can shrink to a near-dry basin. What you find here instead is atmosphere — a secluded clearing just off the trail, with benches, a fire pit and a small shelter, set in a calm forest that feels a world away from the busy river road below. The adjacent Rekettyés spring supplies the water and the good excuse to linger; hikers describe its trickle of water as pleasant on a warm walk, and the whole area as easy to reach yet blissfully uncrowded.
