A Collector's Vision
Tivadar and Sibylle Filotás began hunting for antique porcelain dolls at flea markets in the late 1960s, scouring Munich's Kirchenstraße market and later Hungary's famous Ecseri and Pécs swap fairs. By the late 1980s, a chance visit to a Munich doll museum convinced them that Sibylle's growing collection deserved a permanent home. They chose Tihany—a village they had holidayed in for years—and opened the Babamúzeum in 1994.↗
The couple deliberately rejected the traditional museum format. Instead of walls of labels and dates, they arranged the dolls in lively domestic scenes that recreate the atmosphere of Biedermeier-era drawing rooms and nurseries, letting visitors feel transported rather than lectured to.
