AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Deseda Lookout Tower is a striking 20-metre wooden observation structure on the shore of Lake Deseda, just north of Kaposvár in Somogy county, Hungary. Built in 2014 with a triangular footprint and three levels of viewing platforms, it was designed to lift visitors above the canopy for sweeping panoramas across the country's longest artificial lake and the dense forests that surround it. The tower and its nature-themed playground sit at the heart of a growing eco-tourism zone that includes a 14-kilometre walking trail, a canopy walk, a bird-watching tower, and a cycle path around the lake.↗↗
As of mid-2026 the tower itself is closed indefinitely due to structural problems discovered during inspection, but the lakeside area, trails, playground, and other attractions remain open for visitors who want to enjoy the scenery from ground level.↗↗

The Tower and Its Design
Completed in 2014, the Deseda Lookout Tower rises 20 metres above the lakeshore as a three-storey wooden structure with a triangular plan and modern, sculptural lines. Decorative steel elements accent the muted timber frame, giving the tower a contemporary character that contrasts playfully with the natural surroundings. The design intent was simple: let visitors climb high enough to see over the treetops and take in the full length of Lake Deseda winding through the Somogy hills, along with the mixed woodland that wraps around its 26-kilometre shoreline.
