A pottery village, not a museum

Despite being listed as a tourist attraction and sometimes tagged a museum, Kampoeng Gerabah Dewi Pajang is best understood as a living workshop embedded in a real village of potters. Desa Melikan is one of Central Java's long-standing centres of gerabah (earthenware), where clay work is a family trade passed down through generations rather than a staged performance for visitors. Local accounts even trace the craft back to the 15th century and the arrival of the missionary Sunan Pandanaran.↗↗↗

Roughly three hundred households here are involved in pottery, and the village can run into the thousands of plates and scores of water jars a day, fired in traditional wood kilns and finished with hand-painted detail. So when you arrive, you're walking through a working industry, not a display room.↗↗

The tilted wheel that sets Melikan apart

The heart of the village's reputation is a single technique. Most potters throw their ware on an upright wheel; in Melikan the wheel (perbot) is set at a deliberate angle, and the maker spins it with the foot while sitting tilted (nyerong) on a small stool. Crafted from wood, bamboo and rattan rope, the apparatus is deceptively simple and fast, yielding small to medium pieces—bowls, kendi water jars, celengan money boxes—with striking symmetry.↗↗↗

Artisans explain that the slanted sitting position carries its own philosophy, historically tied to courtesy and modesty for the women potters who worked while dressed in a sarong or kebaya. The result on the shelves is equally characteristic: an earthy reddish-brown from traditional wood firing, and sometimes a smoky purple-black where makers introduce munggur leaves during the smoking stage.↗

In 2022 the technique was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage, and visitors in recent years—including national figures—have come specifically to watch the bamboo-and-rope tools still in daily use, some said to date back to around the 1800s, and to see a whole hamlet shaping clay entirely by hand.↗↗

Getting your hands in the clay

A visit to Dewi Pajang is built around doing, not just seeing. Groups are typically welcomed into a transit room for a short orientation and a video on how gerabah is made, then led out along the lanes to watch villagers at their wheels and workbenches.↗

The hands-on portion is the part visitors remember. Depending on the session, you might first try the upright-wheel and press-moulding techniques by decorating a ready-made clay pencil holder with flowers, fish or your own motifs, then lay your work on the drying boards to be collected later. An artisan then demonstrates the famous tilted wheel up close, transforming a lump of clay into a little vessel, and you can take a turn at it yourself.↗↗

Some programmes also add a batik-writing post, where you trace a drawn motif onto cloth with warm wax before moving on to the pottery—making it a tidy little cultural circuit of two of Java's signature crafts. Most pieces you create can be brought home as a keepsake, and hosts often offer a short course for those who want to learn more than a taste.↗↗

What to browse and buy

Dewi Pajang doubles as a shop and showroom, so between demonstrations you can browse finished ware straight from the makers. Expect a range from everyday traditional pieces—tempayan storage jars, klenthing water vessels and anglo charcoal stoves—to decorative and modern-minimalist vases, pots, bowls and money boxes.↗↗

Buying direct is part of the point: it supports the families whose livelihoods keep the craft alive. The village's output already travels well beyond Klaten, with Melikan pottery finding markets abroad alongside local, hotel and distributor sales—yet nothing beats choosing a piece off the shelf where it was made.↗↗

Planning your visit

Kampoeng Gerabah Dewi Pajang sits in Sayangan, in Desa Melikan, Wedi District, Klaten Regency. Klaten lies in Central Java between Yogyakarta and Solo, making the village an easy cultural side-trip from either city, and the lanes are well signposted as a pottery centre.↗↗

It's an especially good fit for families, school study tours and craft-curious travellers; the pace is relaxed, the setting informal and the villagers—repeatedly praised in reviews—genuinely welcoming even to visitors who drop in just to look and photograph.↗↗

Hands-on education packages are offered at low cost (a basic visit-and-watch option starts from only a few thousand rupiah per person), though the fuller craft experience is best arranged as a group activity. Note that the entrance and parking are not wheelchair accessible.↗↗

Know before you go

Opening hours listed for the site are roughly 9AM to 5PM, Monday to Saturday, with Sunday closed; because this is a home-based workshop rather than a ticketed attraction, it's wise to call ahead to confirm the day and to arrange a demonstration or hands-on session in advance.↗↗
