AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into the Market Square town of Abbeyleix in County Laois, Heritage House is a small museum with an outsized story. Housed in a handsome 19th-century schoolbuilding, it traces the history of Laois from its pre-Christian warring tribes, through the Norman invasion and the dissolution of the monasteries, all the way to the carpet factory whose hand-tufted rugs once furnished the state rooms of the RMS Titanic. An eight-minute film sets the scene before you wander through artefacts, archives and local craft, making it a satisfying stop for anyone drawn to Ireland's layered past.↗↗↗
More than a display room, Heritage House is a community-run project and a recognised stop on Ireland's Ancient East. It pairs a compact but densely packed museum with a craft shop, a family-friendly playground in the grounds, and a genealogy research service for those tracing Laois roots. A guided visit here also opens a door into Abbeyleix itself, a planned estate town built by the de Vesci landlords, with the nearby Sexton House available to view by arrangement.↗↗
