AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On Waghawadi Road in Bhavnagar's Aksharwadi locality, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir rises as a serene two-storey temple crowned by three domes, its grounds wrapped in landscaped gardens and richly worked with carvings, terracotta panels and wall paintings. Established in 2006 and devoted to Lord Swaminarayan, it has become one of the city's most visited spiritual and architectural landmarks.↗↗
Visitors come to see the gleaming marble-style idols of Gopinathji Maharaj and Harikrishna Maharaj at the heart of the sanctum, to watch the rhythm of the daily arti ceremonies, and to explore the on-site museum and audio-visual exhibits that bring the life and teachings of Swaminarayan Bhagwan to life.↗↗
A Modern Temple Built to Ancient Rules
Although the Aksharwadi mandir is a relatively young institution, founded in 2006 by the BAPS Shri Seva Sansthan, its design follows the traditional Shilpa Shastras, the classical Hindu treatises on architecture and iconography. The result is a compact but harmonious structure: two storeys beneath three rounded domes, set within a garden that softens the bustle of Waghawadi Road into something quiet and contemplative.
