AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Shri Hanuman Mandir is a small Hindu temple in Tilak Nagar, a densely settled neighbourhood in west Delhi. Tucked into the residential lanes of Old Sahib Pura near Gurudwara Road, it keeps the devotional rhythm of a local place of worship rather than a grand tourist monument: open early in the morning until late at night, every day of the week, and rated warmly by the handful of visitors who have stopped to leave a note.↗↗
It is dedicated to Hanuman, the monkey-god of strength, loyalty and humble service, one of the most widely worshipped deities across North India. For residents of this part of Tilak Nagar, the temple is the everyday kind of sacred address you walk to for a quiet prayer, a few minutes' stillness away from the busy lanes outside, and the sort of stop that carries far more meaning for the neighbourhood than for an outside sightseer.↗↗
A neighbourhood temple in west Delhi
Tilak Nagar sits in west Delhi, and like much of the area it has grown up around its own tight grid of markets, gurdwaras and mandirs packed close together. Temple directories count dozens of Hindu shrines within the single Tilak Nagar postal area, with temples to Shiva, the Goddess and Hanuman among the most common. In that landscape, Shri Hanuman Mandir near Arya Samaj Mandir and Gurudwara Road is one of many small devotional sites serving the blocks and lanes right outside its gate.
