AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Sarneshwar Mahadev Temple in Gangrar is an ancient Shiva shrine in Chittorgarh district, Rajasthan, whose sacred geography is tied to the Mahabharata. Devotees believe that the great warrior Bhishma performed intense penance here beneath a banyan tree, and that the rock on which he meditated naturally became a Shiva lingam — making this a svayambhu (self-manifested) place of worship.↗
The temple complex is studded with sacred water tanks (kunds) that serve both ritual and devotional purposes, and the site remains a living place of worship, open around the clock to local devotees and travelers seeking a quiet spiritual retreat in rural Rajasthan.↗↗

A Temple from the Age of the Mahabharata
Gangrar, once known as Gangdhar, is believed to have existed even before the events of the Mahabharata. According to local tradition, the venerable Bhishma Pitamah — the grandsire of the Kuru dynasty — manifested the Ganges here to grant liberation (moksha) to his half-brother Vichitravirya. After this act of piety, Bhishma is said to have sat upon a rock beneath a banyan tree and performed severe penance. The stone, legend holds, transformed of its own accord into a Shiva lingam, consecrating the site forever as a place of divine power.
