AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Himayat Sagar Dam is a 1927 barrage on the Esi River, about 20 kilometres west of Hyderabad, built by the last Nizam to protect the city from devastating floods and supply drinking water to the twin cities. Today it is a serene weekend escape where visitors walk the long bund to the sluice gates, watch abundant birdlife, and enjoy the open grasslands — all with no entry fee.↗↗
The dam's story is inseparable from the catastrophic Musi flood of 1908 that ravaged Hyderabad. In its aftermath, Nizam VII commissioned this reservoir on the Esi tributary, named it after his son Himayat Ali Khan, and engineered a system of 17 spillway gates spanning a 2.25-kilometre wall across the landscape. Nearly a century later, the structure still commands the horizon and anchors one of Hyderabad's most important greenbelts.↗↗
