AT A GLANCE
Why go?
In the busy residential sprawl of northwestern Hyderabad, the Sri Yellamma Pochamma Devasthanam at Balkampet is one of the city's oldest and most beloved shrines. Commonly known as the Balkampet Yellamma Temple, it has drawn pilgrims for centuries to honour the mother goddess Yellamma, and its water-clad idol makes it unlike almost any other temple in the twin cities.↗↗
What defines this place is the miracle at its heart. The goddess is said to be Swayambhu, self-manifested rather than installed by human hands, lying in a natural spring some ten feet below ground level. Water that rises continuously through the sanctum is treated as holy teertham, and devotees carry it home in bottles believing it can heal ailments. This is why the temple is also called Jala Durga, "the goddess in water," and why it stays crowded with wishes and vows year-round.↗↗↗
