AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Cambodia Buddhist Monastery (វត្តខ្មែរកុសិនារា, Wat Khmer Kusinara) is one of the international monasteries in Kushinagar, the small Uttar Pradesh town where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained Mahaparinirvana — his final liberation. Set near the Ramabhar Stupa, the site of the Buddha's cremation, this monastery carries Cambodia's Theravada tradition to one of Buddhism's four holiest places.↗↗↗
Kushinagar's monastery district is a remarkable patchwork of Asian Buddhist architectures: Thai, Burmese, Japanese, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tibetan and Cambodian temples stand within walking distance of one another, each reflecting its homeland's design. For Cambodian pilgrims — roughly 93% of the country follows Theravada Buddhism — the monastery offers a familiar spiritual home far from Phnom Penh, close enough to the Mahaparinirvana Temple and Ramabhar Stupa for devotional visits.↗↗
