AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is Delhi's most prominent Sikh house of worship, a gleaming white-marble complex crowned by a golden dome and a tall flagpole that rises improbably calm in the middle of the city's commercial heart, beside Connaught Place. It is at once a living temple, a community kitchen, a hospital, a school and a museum, and it is open around the clock.↗↗↗
The shrine is dedicated to Guru Har Krishan, the eighth Sikh Guru, who stayed here as a young boy in the 1660s and is remembered for serving those struck down by a smallpox and cholera epidemic. His acts of compassion are why devotees still draw water from the sacred Sarovar pond to take home as a blessing, and why thousands sit down to a free communal meal here every day. For a visitor, it offers something rare in Delhi: a moment of genuine peace, colour and human warmth within walking distance of the city's busiest streets.↗↗↗
