AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Manokamna Shani Mandir is a small Hindu temple in the Murlipura Scheme neighbourhood of Jaipur, dedicated to Shani Dev, the planetary deity associated with the slow-moving planet Saturn. Tucked into a residential pocket off Bajrang Vihar Colony, it serves the everyday devotional needs of local worshippers rather than touring visitors.↗↗
In Hindu temple naming, "Manokamna" refers to the fulfilment of a devotee's heartfelt wish, so shrines under this title are places where people come to pray for relief from hardship and for the granting of a long-held desire. The temple sits in one of Jaipur's densest pockets of worship: dozens of Hindu temples are recorded across Murlipura, with several more within easy walking distance.↗↗
What the temple is for
Shani Dev is venerated in the Hindu tradition as the lord of the planet Saturn and as the keeper of karma and its consequences. Devotees who feel they are passing through a difficult stretch of life, or who follow the astrological remedies associated with Saturn, commonly visit Shani shrines to offer prayers, light a lamp, and seek the easing of troubles. A "Manokamna" temple extends this idea: it is understood as a place where a sincere wish, or manokamna, may be fulfilled through the deity's grace.
