AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Wyra Reservoir is a scenic freshwater lake set against rolling green hills in Khammam district, Telangana. Originally built in 1930 as an irrigation project across the Wyra River, a tributary of the Krishna, it has earned a reputation as a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, anglers, and photography enthusiasts — a quiet alternative to the state's more commercialised water-tourism destinations.↗↗
The reservoir stretches nearly 2.4 km along its earthen dam and holds close to 2.5 Tmcft of water. Its catchment region supports hundreds of hectares of farmland and eight surrounding mandals depend on it for drinking water, making it as much a lifeline for the local community as it is a place of natural beauty.↗↗
A Landscape of Hills and Water
What makes Wyra Reservoir special is the setting. The water body sits nestled among low, forested hills that turn lush and vivid green during the monsoon months. Unlike sprawling urban lakes hemmed by buildings, Wyra retains a distinctly rural, wide-open character — the kind of landscape where the horizon meets the water in long, unbroken lines and the evening sky puts on a show with little else around.
