AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked a few minutes' walk from Goregaon West railway station, Ambe Mata Mandir is one of the oldest and most beloved shrines in the Jawahar Nagar quarter — a working neighborhood temple where Mumbai's devotional life is felt up close rather than staged for visitors. Its main deity, Amba Mata (the Mother goddess in her Shakti form), is dressed each day in brightly coloured sarees and greeted by flower sellers at the compound wall.↗↗
What makes a visit quietly rewarding is that several traditions share one compact complex: alongside the Mother's sanctum you will find a popular Hanuman shrine, a spacious sanctum of Lord Shiva with Matangi Devi and Gayatri Maa, and smaller images of Krishna and Shitala Devi, with Nandi seated at the threshold. There is no entry fee, and a free scripture reading room invites you to linger beyond the darshan.↗↗
