AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On the Via Domitiana at Licola, on the northwestern edge of the Naples plain, the Parco degli Uccelli is a small natural and ecotourism reserve built around a remarkable act of local restoration. Where the land had fallen into a state of severe neglect, a family — Titta Monetti and relatives — set about winning it back for nature, turning a degraded corner of the Campanian countryside into a green refuge and a home for numerous Mediterranean birds.↗↗↗
The park bills itself as a place "where nature is at home": a working wildlife habitat and outdoor centre that has welcomed visitors for canoe outings, picnics and grilling on the grass, a children's didactic farm, seasonal events and a Christmas village. It carries the ancient name of this stretch of coast — Liternum, the Roman settlement that once stood near here — and appears in the Campania region's sound archive as a listening post for birdsong beside the busy provincial road.↗↗↗
