AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Ōtsuka Kofun (応塚古墳) is a small ancient burial mound designated as a local historical site (史跡) in the quiet Nishibesshocho neighborhood of Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture. Tucked among rice paddies and residential streets in the flat lowlands of the former Hekikai District, it is a humble survivor of the region's Kofun-period past, the sort of quiet earthen mound that dot the countryside here and serve as physical reminders of a civilization that flourished roughly 1,500–1,700 years ago.↗
Unlike the nationally designated tumuli further north in Anjo—such as the 68-meter Futago Kofun or Himegawa Kofun in the Sakurai group—Ōtsuka is a modest local site. Its presence in the lowland plain, rather than atop a terrace, suggests it may be a smaller circular or square mound built by a community-level leader or clan rather than a paramount chief. The kofun is accessible from nearby streets and appears to have been preserved within the surrounding neighborhood.↗↗
