AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Seibu Green Road is a 635-meter linear park in Fukui City's Yashiro-Kitamachi district that connects the forested slopes of Mount Ashizu to the Fukui Youth Sports Park. Rather than a single enclosed garden, it unfolds as a sequence of themed open spaces—ancient burial mounds, a Japanese-style garden, outdoor fitness stations, brick-edged flower beds, and a sculptural plaza—making it one of the city's most pleasant walking routes.↗↗
Every winter, the greenway's Culture Square transforms into a community-made illumination display, lit from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The project began when local middle-school students proposed ways to bring neighbors back to the park, and their idea has grown into one of Fukui's most charming holiday spots.↗↗
A Walk Between Mountain and City
At 635 meters, Seibu Green Road is not long enough to exhaust you but rich enough to reward a slow stroll. The path begins on the Ashizu Mountain side among trees and climbs gently to the Kofun Plaza, then descends through cultivated garden sections toward the open lawns and sports facilities at the city end. Locals use it daily for jogging, dog-walking, and as a shortcut for hiking Mount Ashizu's trail network.
