Gokokuji

What to notice in the grounds

The most substantial survivor from the founding era is the sōmon, the temple's general gate, built of keyaki (Japanese zelkova) wood and still standing today. It was offered by Abe Teruko, wife of Tsunamasa, the second lord of the Kii Tokugawa branch, who — like the imperial consort Tōfuku-mon'in before her — had become a devoted patron of the temple's founder.↗↗

The present main hall is a reinforced-concrete building relocated and rebuilt in 1962, a notably modern choice for its time. Beside it rises the bell tower, cast anew in 1962 after the original bell was lost in the Second World War, and home to the temple's New Year's Eve joya-no-kane bell-ringing. The grounds also hold the founder's mausoleum, the burial grounds of generations of Danrin heads and lay patrons, and a permanent memorial hall for shared cremation burials.↗

The treasures and their legends

Gokokuji keeps a small cast of unusual objects and the stories behind them. Among its treasures is said to be the first golden-chrysanthemum-crest kasaya (a high priest's robe) ever granted within the Nichiren sect, presented by the imperial consort Tōfuku-mon'in, daughter of the shogun's family, who studied the Lotus Sutra with the founder and was said to have sewn the crest herself.↗↗

The temple's protective deities come with vivid folklore. A Benzaiten figure is enshrined as guardian against fire, because legend holds the goddess appeared in the founder's dream and swore to keep the temple safe — and it has not burned since. A Myōken Bodhisattva image is venerated for warding off theft, because a burglar, tormented by the bodhisattva in repeated dreams, is said to have returned to confess and leave a written apology, a document the temple still treasurers. Nearby stands a stone figure of Kisshōmomaten (Kishijōten), the child-protecting guardian.↗

The 'Danjo' water and local life

Yamashina long struggled with water shortages, and tradition dates the solution to 1690, when villagers and the monks of the Danrin together completed a buried underground channel to divert surplus water. The system, called Danjo water after the temple's nickname Danrin ('danjo'), supplied cool water in summer and mild water in winter and sustained the neighborhood until the early Shōwa era. Depleted by modern subway construction, the site was revived by a local preservation society and now holds a Jōgyū Bosatsu statue as a focus of community exchange.↗↗

Visiting and collecting a goshuin

This is not a grand tourist temple, and visitors should expect the feel of an active parish church: a quiet compound, red banners marking the grounds, and a main hall that is often closed. Several visitors report that the bell tower or entrance is unlocked by pressing a buzzer or asking at the office, and that the resident priests are glad to explain the temple's history. The stamp book (goshuin / goshudai) can normally be received in the morning-to-afternoon window; allow time, as the office is staffed during temple hours rather than around the clock.↗↗↗

Getting there

Gokokuji sits about a five-minute walk from JR, subway and Keihan Yamashina stations, on Sanjō-dōri, marked roughly between a drugstore and a convenience store; from Kyoto Station it is a single JR stop on the Tōkaidō or Kosei line. By car it is around a kilometre from the Kyoto East interchange on the Meishin expressway, and there is room for several cars within the grounds.↗↗↗
