AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Ninomine (Nakasha Shinseki) is a quiet sacred stop set along the torii-clad pilgrimage trail that climbs the wooded slopes of Mount Inari behind Kyoto's famous Fushimi Inari Taisha. Its name marks it as the "second peak" of the mountain, and the Nakasha Shinseki—translated as the site of a former "middle shrine" where a deity still remains—gives the spot its hushed, devotional character.↗↗
Here the deity Aoki Okami is enshrined, one of several ancient shrine-sites strung around the mountain's peaks in the Fushimi Inari complex. Reached on foot rather than by any main gate, Ninomine rewards the walkers who leave the busiest lower paths and continue toward the summit, trading crowds for mossy stone markers, small fox shrines and the cool green stillness of the forest.↗↗↗
