AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Fukyo Falls (風挙の滝, Fūkyo no Taki) is a charming ~10-meter slanted waterfall in the Shiobara highlands of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. Though modest in height compared to its famous neighbor Ryuka Falls, it draws admiration for the closeness you can get to it — its spray, wide plunge pool, and stable flow make it feel much grander than its measurements suggest.↗↗
The waterfall sits along the popular trail to Ryuka Falls, one of the legendary Ten Great Waterfalls of Shiobara, making it a natural highlight on a 20-minute forest hike from the free parking lot. The journey itself — past mossy cliffs, columnar basalt, a swaying suspension bridge, and a poetry monument — is the real attraction for many visitors.↗↗
A Waterfall You Can Walk Right Up To
Fukyo Falls has earned its reputation as a waterfall you can see up close — and it delivers. The ~8 to 10-meter cascade pours in a slanted sheet into a spacious, crystal-clear plunge pool. You can stand at the base, feel the mist on your face, and watch the water tumble over mossy rocks without any barrier between you and the flow. After heavy rain the volume swells dramatically, turning it into a thundering torrent that visitors describe as genuinely breathtaking.
