AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On the quiet border between Nishinomiya and Kobe, the little Shukugawa River has been turned into one of Japan's most beloved cherry-blossom parks. The whole watercourse is managed as a single linear green space — the Shukugawa Riverside Green Space, known to locals simply as Shukugawa Park — where some 1,300 cherry trees line both banks over a tree-bordered walk nearly 2.8 km long. Each spring the canopy of Somei Yoshino blooms into pale pink tunnels overhead, and hanami picnickers spread out on the lawns beneath.↗↗↗
What makes this spot special is not just the quantity of blossoms but the way they are framed: mature pines, the slow ribbon of the river and the maroon carriages of the Hankyu railway all enter the picture at once. It is an easy, flat, waterside stroll that rewards you the moment you step off the platform — and because it was named to the national "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Sites," it carries a weight that most city riverside parks simply don't.↗↗
