Grave of Sumo wrestler Raiden

The Legend of Raiden Tameemon

Raiden Tameemon was born Seki Tarōkichi in 1767 in the village of Ōishi, Shinano Province (today's Tomi). From childhood he displayed astonishing physical gifts—standing approximately 197 cm tall and weighing around 170 kg, he was a colossus in an era when average heights were much lower. His strength became the stuff of folklore even before he reached Edo: as a boy, he supposedly dragged a 20-kilogram stone mortar through the fields; as a young man on the Usui Pass highway, he is said to have lifted his packhorse off the narrow road to let a daimyō's procession pass.↗↗

He entered the Urakaze stable at 17 and became the patron wrestler of Matsue Domain under Lord Matsudaira Fumon, a renowned tea master. Adopting the shikona Raiden in 1788, he made his Edo debut in 1790 and rose to ozeki—the highest rank accessible to him—in 1795. He held that rank for over sixteen years across 27 tournaments. Despite a career of 254 wins with only 10 losses and 28 championship-equivalent records, Raiden never received the yokozuna license, a title controlled by specific martial lineages with which his stable had no connection.↗↗

His dominance was so fearsome that the sumo authorities banned specific techniques—such as thrusting fingers at an opponent's eyes and pulling at the topknot—that only he could have used effectively. At the height of his powers, the shogun Tokugawa Ienari himself heard of his fame and invited him to perform before the castle. Raiden retired in 1811 at age 44, with his contemporaries noting he still had strength in reserve.↗↗

Visiting the Grave and the Raiden Trail in Tomi

The grave sits in the Ōishi district of Tomi city and is designated as a municipal historical site. It stands alongside the family burial ground of the Seki clan, where visitors can also see the unusual tombstone of Raiden's father Han'emon, shaped like a sake barrel to honor his great love of drink—an eccentric act of filial piety that reveals something of the man behind the legend.↗

The grave is part of a loose Raiden Trail of four municipal historical sites in Tomi. Nearby you can find the restored birthplace of Raiden, maintained and opened for visitors by a local preservation society; a memorial stele along the old Hokkoku Kaidō highway in the Makie area, inscribed with approximately 400 characters of classical Chinese composed by the famous late-Edo scholar Sakuma Shōzan; and a pair of stone Nio guardian statues in the Tanaka district connected to the story of Raiden's mother praying for his safe birth. The city's Raiden statue and the Raiden museum at Michi-no-Eki Roadside Station Raiden Kurumi no Sato provide further context about his life and legacy.↗

A Place of Folk Belief

What makes this site particularly moving is the story told by the stone itself. The grave is visibly chipped and damaged—a result of generations of local people shaving off pieces of the headstone. The folk belief held that a fragment of Raiden's grave would bring healthy growth to children and prosperity to business. The original memorial stele along the highway suffered the same fate, its characters worn nearly illegible from the same practice, until it was rebuilt during the Meiji era. Today, old and new stones stand side by side, both testaments to the enduring power of Raiden's legend in this community.↗

Practical Information

The grave and surrounding Raiden sites are free to visit and managed by local residents. Tomi is accessible by car via the Joshinetsu Expressway or by rail via the Shinano Railway to Shigeno Station, a short drive from the sites. A car is the most practical way to cover all four Raiden historical locations, which are spread across several kilometers of rural farmland. There are no formal opening hours; the area is a working rural landscape where local community members maintain the sites.↗

The Michi-no-Eki Raiden Kurumi no Sato roadside station (a short drive away) houses the Raiden Museum and offers a good starting point for learning about his life before visiting the grave sites. The museum displays artifacts including Raiden's handprint, travel diaries, and biographical exhibits. The Tomi city government organized special commemorative events in 2017 for the 250th anniversary of his birth, and Raiden remains a source of deep civic pride.↗

For those interested in sumo history or the cultural afterlife of legendary athletes, this small cluster of sites in rural Nagano offers a rare, intimate experience of how a community preserves and venerates a hero across centuries—without crowds, without commercialization, just a quiet grave in a field of stone and story.
