AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is a natural rock-sheltered devotional site in the hills of Saint-Joseph, Martinique. Inaugurated in 1904, it draws on the tradition of Marian grottoes that spread across the Catholic world following the 1858 apparitions in Lourdes, France. A small spring flows beside the grotto, adding to its quiet, meditative atmosphere.↗↗
For Martiniquais Catholics, this is one of the island's most frequented pilgrimage sites, especially during Holy Week. Its setting in lush vegetation, the sound of running water, and the stone-vaulted chapel make it a place of genuine serenity whether or not you share the faith that draws the crowds.↗↗
History and Origins
The story begins with the private Habitation Belle-Étoile estate, whose owners ceded a parcel of land to the parish priest for the construction of a Marian shrine. The site, where a spring already bubbled from the rock, seemed naturally suited to the purpose. On 8 December 1904, the grotto was inaugurated with what was described as a grand ceremony — a procession said to have stretched over a kilometer from the town center to the hillside quarter of Morne-des-Olives.
