AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Buntal Esplanade is a scenic waterfront walkway perched above the mangroves of Kampung Buntal, a traditional Malay fishing village where the Sarawak River opens into the South China Sea. Built in 2015 as both a public recreation space and a bird-watching observation platform, the esplanade offers sweeping views of the tidal coastline, distant Mount Santubong, and the headlands of Bako National Park. It has become a quietly beloved escape for Kuching locals and a discovery for travelers willing to venture thirty kilometers from the city center.↗↗↗
A Hidden Waterfront Walkway
The esplanade is a long concrete walkway—stretching nearly a kilometer—elevated above a muddy-sandy shoreline fringed with mangrove forest. Designed to be wheelchair-friendly, it allows visitors to stroll over the tidal flats without getting their feet wet. From its platforms you can look across the broad expanse of Bako Buntal Bay toward the sea, watch mudskippers wriggle among the mangrove roots below, and see the silhouette of Santubong mountain to one side and Bako National Park to the other.↗
