AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tokaanu Thermal Pools is a low-key, family-friendly hot springs reserve on the southern shore of Lake Taupō, in the heart of New Zealand's geothermally active Volcanic Plateau. Here you can sink into natural mineral pools fed directly by underground thermal springs, alongside a larger heated public pool and a small warm wading pool for young children. It is exactly the kind of place travellers seek out after a day on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or the slopes of Mt Ruapehu.↗↗
What sets Tokaanu apart from a ordinary swim club is its living Māori heritage. The local iwi Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and in particular Ngāti Kurauia, have lived beside the Tokaanu Stream and its thermal area since the 16th century, still using the waters for bathing, cooking and relaxing. A short free walk through the steaming natural grounds lets you see where those hot springs surface among the native bush.↗↗
