AT A GLANCE
Why go?
High on the hillside of Cerro Huamantanga, in the Quebrada Verde settlement of Pachacámac south of Lima, the Maria Diocesan Shrine of Consecration (Santuario Diocesano María de la Consagración) is a modest modern church that has become one of Lima Sur's most visited places of pilgrimage. Free to enter and open most days, it draws tens of thousands of faithful each year who come for its reported apparition history, its two winding Stations of the Cross, and the quiet valley views that surround it.↗↗
The shrine's story begins not with an architect but with a vision: devotees recall the Virgin Mary appearing here in 1989 and 1990, leading the faithful to build a sanctuary on this very cerro in 2000. The Bishop of Lurín later raised it to official standing as a diocesan shrine, and today it hosts masses, weddings, baptisms and spiritual retreats under the simple protection of concrete, glass and a hilltop breeze.↗↗
