AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Nevado Pastoruri is a striking glacier in Peru's Cordillera Blanca, perched above 5,000 meters in Huascarán National Park—one of the few tropical glaciers on Earth you can reach on foot without mountaineering gear. Once a playground for skiers and ice-climbers, it has become a sobering symbol of climate change, having lost more than half its surface area since 1995. Today, the trail leading up to its crevassed ice walls and meltwater lakes is designated as the Ruta del Cambio Climático (Climate Change Route), an interpretive walk that shows visitors exactly what global warming has done to this ancient ice.↗↗↗
Despite its rapid retreat, the glacier remains enormous and visually breathtaking: deep blue crevasses, towering ice walls, and mirror-perfect reflections in the glacial lake at its base. It is also one of the most accessible glaciers in the world, reachable via one of the highest roads on the planet, making this an extraordinary experience even for travelers without technical climbing experience.↗↗
