AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched on a hill on the edge of Vigan City in Ilocos Sur, Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo is a sprawling wildlife park where zebras and camels share the grounds with Bengal tigers and white lions, and ostrich and spotted deer wander freely along the paths. Set on roughly 100 hectares of rolling plains and hillside that once belonged to former Ilocos Sur governor Luis "Chavit" Singson, it has been a signature family stop in the Ilocos since it opened in 2003.↗↗↗
What sets it apart from a conventional zoo is how hands-on it is: you can feed parrots and hornbills bananas and seeds, ride a pony or a miniature horse-drawn tiburin past grazing animals, and meet tamed big cats up close. Atop the hill, the Safari Gallery displays Singson's collection of preserved hunting trophies from trips abroad, while the terraces reward you with sweeping views over Vigan and toward the West Philippine Sea. It sits just a few minutes from the cobblestones of Calle Crisologo, making it an easy half-day side trip on any Vigan itinerary.↗↗
