Rangitopuni Stream
The Rangitopuni Stream is a quietly sinuous waterway at Riverhead, on the northern fringe of Auckland where the Waitematā Harbour thins into its upper reaches. Roughly five kilometres of gentle S-bends snake inland, their banks shifting from pine forest to stands of mature native bush—a serene, sheltered paddling route just minutes from the city that still feels far from it. For kayakers and paddleboarders the appeal is the calm, glassy water and the layered history packed into those bends: the ruins of a once-busy mill, the abandoned ghost of a fighter plane on a bank, and the memory of the waka portage that Māori used to link the Waitematā to the Kaipara Harbour and the Far North beyond.
