Kaisersäule
The Kaisersäule is an 11.4-metre stone pyramid perched at 1,700 m above the village of Thaur in Tyrol, Austria, marking the exact spot where Emperor Franz I of Austria paused in October 1815 to gaze across the Inn Valley at the battlefields of the Tyrolean freedom struggle. Erected by local miners in the emperor's honour and rebuilt in stone in 1839, it has become one of the region's most beloved hiking destinations. Reached only on foot through the Karwendel Nature Park, the monument rewards walkers with panoramic views over the Inn Valley and a tangible connection to early 19th-century Habsburg history. The trail from Thaur climbs through mixed forest, passes alpine meadows where chamois are frequently spotted, and arrives at this improbably monumental stone structure standing alone against the sky.
