Chaplin Lake
Chaplin Lake is a vast saline lake in southern Saskatchewan that hosts one of North America's most spectacular shorebird migrations. Each spring, over 100,000 birds representing more than 30 species land on its mudflats and salt pans to rest and refuel before continuing to the Arctic. Among them are more than half the world's Sanderlings, making this one of the most critical inland stopover sites on the continent. The lake and its surrounding native prairie sit along the Trans-Canada Highway between Moose Jaw and Swift Current, making it an accessible and unforgettable detour for road trippers, birders, and anyone curious about the wild heart of the Canadian prairies.
