Sobor Svyatoy Zhivonachal'noy Troitsy

On Izmaylovskiy Prospekt in central St Petersburg, the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Izmailovsky Life Guards Regiment stops visitors in their tracks: a vast white Neoclassical temple crowned with soaring sky-blue domes scattered with golden stars. Consecrated in 1835 and designed by Vasily Stasov, it was the regimental church of one of the Russian imperial guard's most senior regiments, and its silhouette—legend says visible from some 20 kilometres away—remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city's southern quarter. This is a living Orthodox cathedral as much as a monument: regular services are held beneath a towering iconostasis and a colonnaded interior of dazzling white, while outside you can trace two centuries of imperial, Soviet and post-Soviet history in bronze, marble and gunmetal. For travellers already captivated by St Petersburg's grand cathedrals, the Izmailovsky Trinity Cathedral offers a more local, less-crowded encounter with the same monumental ambition.
