Bashar Al-Rumi Mosque
Tucked along Sheikh Ahmad Al Jaber Street in Kuwait City's historic Sharq district, Bashar Al-Rumi Mosque has served as a neighborhood place of worship since 1916. Named for Bashar bin Yousif Al-Roumi, a philanthropist whose family dominated Kuwait's pearl-diving industry for generations, this small heritage mosque is one of the oldest standing in the old city and a quiet testament to the generosity of Kuwait's merchant class. Originally built from mud-brick and plastered with gypsum, the mosque was modest in scale—its enclosed prayer hall held only three rows of worshippers, with two more accommodated under a covered liwan veranda. What it lacked in size, it made up for in light: tall windows along the walls flood the interior with natural brightness and ventilation, a distinctive design feature that has earned the mosque a serene, airy reputation among regular visitors.
