Monolithe de Sardières
The Monolithe de Sardières is a 93-metre needle of golden cargneule rock that erupts from the dense conifer forest of Plan Bois at 1,670 metres altitude in the Haute-Maurienne valley of Savoie, France. One of the tallest free-standing monoliths on earth, it gives its name to a developed natural site at the threshold of the Vanoise National Park — the very spot where France's first national park was inaugurated on 26 June 1965. Today the site draws hikers, climbers, cross-country skiers, and curious families alike. A well-marked loop trail circles the base of the pillar through larch and mountain pine woodland, interpretation panels explain the surrounding ecology, and a land-art sculpture trail adds an imaginative twist. The south face still commands respect from experienced climbers tackling routes first pioneered in 1957.
