Espaço Cultural Mauro Mota
The Espaço Cultural Mauro Mota is the beating heart of Nazaré da Mata's identity as Pernambuco's official State Capital of Rural Maracatu. Housed in the city's former public slaughterhouse and converted into a cultural center in 2002, the space preserves costumes, documents, and living memory of the maracatu de baque solto tradition — a manifestation recognized as Brazilian Cultural Heritage. Named after the poet Mauro Mota, who spent his formative childhood years in this small Zona da Mata town, it serves as a gateway into the Afro-indigenous and European roots that shape the region's carnival and popular culture. A visit here is a compact immersion in one of Brazil's most vibrant folk traditions. The space hosts rotating exhibitions, state-level cultural programming, and recently underwent a city-led revitalization to renew its role as both a museum and a gathering point for the community that keeps maracatu alive.
